Shower Replacement Guide for Greater Houston Homeowners
Shower replacement is a different scope than a tub-to-shower conversion or a full remodel. You're swapping a worn or dated shower for a new one inside the existing footprint — often the right move when the rest of the bathroom is in good shape.
When replacement is the right scope
If the existing shower is leaking, the grout and waterproofing are failing, the surround is dated or cracked, or you simply want a different look — replacement typically lands in the $9,000–$17,000 range for an acrylic system or $14,000–$30,000 for tile across Greater Houston. Expansive-clay foundation movement that has shifted a slab-built shower pan is one of the most common reasons replacement (rather than refinishing) is the right call in 1950s–80s Bellaire, Meyerland, Sharpstown, Memorial, Spring Branch, Pasadena, Aldine, and Clear Lake-area stock. Prior Harvey / Imelda / Beryl water intrusion is another common trigger.
- Failing waterproofing or visible leaks behind tile (especially in 1900s–1940s intown bungalow / four-square / shotgun stock)
- Cracked or chalky fiberglass surrounds from the 70s–90s in Bellaire, Meyerland, Sharpstown, Memorial, Spring Branch, Westbury, Pasadena, and older Cypress / Spring / Katy / Kingwood stock
- Outdated builder-grade tile in 90s–2000s Kingwood, Atascocita, Cypress, Spring-Harris, Katy-Harris, Tomball, Willowbrook, Champions, and Klein subdivisions
- Slab cracks or shifted drains under existing shower pans (common in pre-2000 slab ranches due to expansive Beaumont Formation clay)
- Lingering mildew or soft subfloor from prior tropical-storm water intrusion

Frequently asked questions
Should I refinish the existing shower or replace it?+
Refinishing (reglazing the surround, regrouting tile) is a short-term cosmetic fix — typically 3–7 years of life if the substrate is sound. Replacement is the right call when waterproofing has failed, the pan is cracked, joists or subfloor are soft, the slab has shifted under the pan, or prior storm water sat in the wall cavity. In Greater Houston's older intown pier-and-beam stock and in 1950s–70s slab ranches that have lived through decades of expansive-clay movement (and one or more major storm events), water damage hidden behind tile is the most common reason refinishing isn't worth the money.
